Itinerary

On arrival at Cape Town International Airport, you will be met by AAMT.  After this you will be transferred to your hotel in the foothills of the strikingly beautiful Table Mountain.  Tonight, with the stealth of a leopard, we plan the hunt during an African Dinner Experience.

Cape Town to Mossel Bay

The hunt commences nice and early from central Cape Town and heads east making our way past the Cape Fold mountains.  Part of our route is the beautiful coastal road known as Clarence drive, it was built by Italian POW’s during World War 2.  We will stop in Hermanus for a coffee and see if there are any Southern Right Wales in Walker Bay.  They frequent these coastal waters between June and December.  Hermanus is a popular holiday/fishing town and a Whale watching paradise about 120km South East from Cape Town.  After our stop over in town we head out further South East until we reach Cape Agulhas – the Southern most tip of Africa.  Here we’ll see the meeting place of the Great Atlantic & Indian Ocean and the 2nd oldest Lighthouse in South Africa, dating back to 1848.  After our visit, we leave the Agulhas bank behind us and head inland through the Overberg region to reach Mossel Bay.  This region is known for its Barley, Canola and Sheep farming and makes for a very scenic ride through the countryside.  We’ll pass Swellendam, the Capital of the Overberg, Heidelberg and Riversdal, known for game and ostrich farming and the interesting Aloe Ferox factory shops of Albertinia.  Mossel Bay is a bustling harbour town and a very popular holiday destination.  Tonight we will enjoy a succulent dinner, joined by some of our famous Cape Wines.

Mossel Bay to Tsitsikamma

After a tasty breakfast we depart for our second day’s riding.  Today’s route takes us all along the Langeberg and twice over it.  A stealth mountain range which spans over 700 km’s and also the Northern boundary of the Garden Route.  The Cape has some of the most spectacular passes being the most mountainous Province in South Africa. We are taking a joyride over the Outeniqua Pass and return from the other side over the Montagu Pass.  This is about a 80 km loop ride that will leave you speechless, make sure to have enough memory space as we will be doing a couple of photo stops and enjoy a coffee in this amazing mountainous wilderness.

We make our way through George, capital of the Garden Route and towns like Wilderness, Sedgefield, Knysna and Plettenberg Bay.  Before we reach Tsitsikamma National Park, we will stop at the Bloukrans Bridge Bungee jump.  It is the highest commercial bungee jump in the world at 216 meters high, if not for a few bungees then only to watch a few other folks doing it.  Afterwards, we have about 20 km to our destination.  On our arrival we get checked in and start unwinding.  There are numerous hiking trails of which the Otter trail is the most popular.  There is also an easy short trail leading to the Stormsriver suspension bridge which is part of the Otter hiking trail.  Tonight we enjoy a tasty dinner and relax in the tranquil forest reserve.

Tsitsikamma to Addo

Today is Safari time.  We head east and leave the Garden Route behind us and enter the Eastern Cape.  Our morning coffee will be in the surfer’s town of Jeffreys Bay.  We enjoy the surfer atmosphere and then continue to Addo Elephant National Park.  You will notice how the geography and Flora changes as we make our way northwards further inland and at a greater elevation.  The Addo Elephant National Park is close to a hundred years old and their main mandate was to save the Addo/Eastern Cape Elephant from extinction.  It is also famous for the invention of the Elephant Fence and the only Park with the big 7, Big 5 + Great White sharks & Southern Right whales.

The name Addo is a corruption of a Khoi Khoi word meaning “The passage” referring to a route through the dense “Spekboom” Park bush vegetation.

The Khoi – San are the Aboriginals of Southern Africa, ancient tribal peoples known for their hunting skills, gathering practices and nomadic lifestyles.  They were also the creators of the famous rock paintings, found all over South Africa and as far as Angola, Zambia, Malawi, Zimbabwe & Mozambique.  Late afternoon we head out on a safari to see some game.  There are over 500 healthy African Elephants to spot.  It is an awesome spectacle to watch groups of up to 30 interact and socialize with each other.  We finish the day off with a sun downer from one of the best views over the Addo National Park.  Tonight, is a true African experience.  The relaxed atmosphere will bring you to tranquility and the night sky will bedazzle you.

Addo to Knysna

Today we have an early start, we begin the day by experiencing a game safari through the Addo National Park.  There are plenty of animal species, from Rhinos to Lions.  After our game drive we have a coffee and head back South Westward toward the Garden Route.  We reach Knysna by early afternoon.  There is plenty to see and do around the Harbour and we’ll be staying in the famous Log Inn, a short walking distance away.  After an awesome dinner, you are free to walk around the Knysna Waterfront, and explore whilst having a good time.  We have 2 nights in Knysna and do not have an early morning the next day.

Knysna Rest Day

After a bit of a lay in, we have a delicious breakfast and start prepping for our leisurely day.  We do a nice ride to the Heads to see this massive natural channels, connecting the Indian with the inland lake.  Next up, we visit Knoetzie, which is a 30 min ride out of town.  It’s a bizarre hamlet consisting of castles on the beach front.  Bring your bathing suit and we spend a while here, going for a plunge in the lagoon or hitting the surf.  Afterwards we head back to the Log Inn and leisure time until dinner.  Knysna is known for its oyster industry with pods around the lake.  This is as fresh as it gets, tonight we feast on some fresh ones.

Knysna to Oudtshoorn

Our last morning close to the shore.  After breakfast we head out of town, direction east and then we turn north onto the R339.  Today we’ll be riding through some of the densest and most remote forests in South Africa.  We might spot Vervet monkeys, Duikers, Knysna Loeries or any other forest creature crossing our path on the way.  We’ll enjoy a coffee by THE BIGTREE and then continue along the Prins Alfred Pass through the Kammanassie Mountains into the Klein Karoo – on the other side of the mountains.  This is a semi arid region, sandwiched by two great mountain chains running parallel with each other for over 500 km.  The name Karoo means place of drought, it is a weird and beautiful landscape, an inland sea in prehistoric times and home to the biggest diversity of succulent plants on the planet.

Oudtshoorn to Cape Town

Today we wake up with a mood of disappointment, since it is our last day riding together and the conclusion of our full circle tour from Cape Town to Cape Town.  The sad mood doesn’t last long.  Shortly after a hearty breakfast all is excited and we head West from Oudtshoorn.  The last day’s riding is the “Grand Finale” as they say.  We are travelling the R62, unarguably the best stretch of motorcycle road in South Africa.  It makes for a glorious open road drive, with the scenic Huisrivier Pass only 45 minutes into our ride.  The panoramas are breathtaking and the views awesome.  We’ll do a stop at Ronnie’s Sex Shop to have a closer look at his bizarre roadside bar in the middle of nowhere.  After Barrydale, we take in the scenic Tradouw Pass back over the Langeberg into the Overberg region.  We’ll enjoy a traditional Roosterkoek (BBQ baked bread) for lunch, and enjoy the scenic countryside.  All done with lunch we ride on along the Langeberg back to Cape Town.  This is an awesome ride which will take us over some dramatic passes and panoramic countryside.  We arrive in Cape Town in the afternoon.  Tonight is our last dinner together and we reminisce the hunt.
